During the years 1880-1930, nearly 400,000 Finns and Russians emigrated to America. Of these about 250,000 passed through Hanko, travelling first to England and then on to the USA, Canada or Australia. They started the journey on the same steamships that transported butter, the major export of those days, to England. There are three cranes flying out to the sea on the top of the monument. A similar monument has been raised in Lake Worth, Florida to the memory of the Finnish emigrants. The Finnish Immigrant Monument in Lake Worth features two soaring birds.
