The canal system of Bologna has been created to connect the city with the river Po and to provide water and mechanical energy factories of the city. The water network in Bologna was gradually developed between the twelfth and the sixteenth century, from two fundamental works, which the floodgates of San Ruffillo and Casalecchio respectively on Savena and the river Reno, initially made necessary to increase the number of mills from grain to feed the moat and the second circle of city walls.(Wikipedia)
