The building was originally constructed, towards the end of the 19th century, as a power station for the Post Office. It was subsequently acquired by the Liebig Extract of Meat Company, manufacturers of Oxo beef stock cubes (hence the name of the tower), for conversion into a cold store. The building currently houses a set of bijou arts and crafts shops, a gallery, a restaurant with superb views of the River Thames, and residential apartments. Sea Containers House was complete in 1978.It is a 15 storey office block.
