Central Works of José Batlle y Ordoñez were initiated on February 13, 1930, entering into service its first generating unit of 25 MW on 1 June 1931. Originally consisting of two 25 MW turbo-alternators each fed by steam from eight coal-fired boilers, downloaded from ships docked at the pier of the plant. In 1955 the Central expands with the installation of units 3 and 4, 50 MW each, fed by three dual fuel boilers, coal and fuel oil. In 1970 he added the Fifth Unit of 80 MW and in 1976 the sixth unit of 125 MW. Currently, Units 1 and 2 of the Central Batlle are disaffected.
