The Dartmoor legend of the Wild Huntsman and his Whist Hounds is well known. It tells of a demonic hunter, Dewer: the Devil himself. When night fell, Dewer hunted down people who had become lost on the moor. Accompanied by a pack of fearsome, ghostly dogs known as the Whist Hounds (‘Whist’ or ‘wisht’ are said to mean ‘eerie’.) Dewer would drive people to their deaths; falling from the highest cliff at the Dewerstone, the 150’ high Devil’s Rock.
Below the cliffs runs the moorland River Plym, dropping in a series of falls, through ancient gnarled oak woodland. Shortly after the Dewerstone there is a confluence with the River Meavy and immediately below this is Shaugh Bridge.

I never tire of repeating it in its work: the effect achieved in the water is wonderful.
The rest spectacular.
