Nice idea, but you should try to shot braceting 3 exposure. That will give you more details in the light and shadows. In this shot the whites is blown completly and you have got a image without any contrast

Agreed, you must learn to use bracketing exposures if you want to improve your skills in this field of photography. You have the camera and correct program to do as well as anyone lese here. It just takes time, practice and patience.
