Here we are in what each Viterbese continues to call the Town Square and that is, since 1200, the city center. The square was built in a place largely occupied by the cemetery of the church of Sant'Angelo in Spatha and includes, besides the church, the buildings that still house the offices of the City. At the center lies the Palazzo dei Priori. Through a corridor that is placed in communication with the Palazzo del Podesta, who is on his left. On the right is, however, the Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo, now the headquarters of the Prefecture. You can see also placed on two columns at the entrance of Via Roma and Via San Lorenzo, two lions, a symbol of the city, carved into a stone called "nenfro". An ancient legend, in fact, that Viterbo was founded by Hercules, who was represented covered with the skin of a lion. The emblem of the city would own the lion killed by Hercules as one of his famous "hard work". In fact, during the first period, the municipal, country and city wanted to have a symbol of their independence. Usually, the Guelph cities, that is more faithful to the Pope chose the lion. Those Ghibelline, however, allies of the emperor preferred the eagle.

Agree with Phil in DOF. Big wooden door looks great! 9,5 for me.
