I use a cheap Sony DSC-W290 because of its high EV step in bracketing and small size, but the noise sometimes is just overwhelming

In Photomatix you can somewhat reduce noise by micro smoothing and smoothing hightlights. It's a trade off though, as you will most likely lose some details in the rest of the picture. Welcome to Creme.
