The present church stands on the site of an earlier church dedicated to St. Nicholas. Initially it was called St. Nicholas de Curte, but in 1507, Pope Julius II granted as the church of Viterbo and gave it its present name, in honor of an eponymous shrine of Viterbo and because the oak was the emblem of the coat of arms of his family oak. Moreover, even then, as now, an oak tree stood in the center of the square outside the church.
In 1532 Pope Clement VII gave the church to the guild of Butchers, who still own it.
The church was rebuilt by Pope Benedict XIII in the first half of the eighteenth century, which gave the work to Philip Raguzzini, then continued by the Roman Domenico Gregorini: the church was completed in 1731.
Restoration work was undertaken by Pius IX in the nineteenth century and after the Second World War, which reduced the church in poor condition

Come sempre il processo Γ¨ indiscutibile. Il P.O.V. mi rende perplesso. La didascalia meritava qualcosa in piΓΉ
