Part of the harbour at Simon's Town on False Bay in the Western Cape
This is where a 27-year-old geologist and former parson landed on HMS Beagle in June 1836. He took a cart round the mountains into Cape Town, which he thought a pretty and singular place, but he was a bit disappointed not to find more wildlife. He travelled inland to Paarl, to examine the famous dome-shaped granite hills and made some interesting observations on the rocks. He is not, however, famous for his geological work.
